Placing an emphasis on process, Hi-ARTS supports Artists of the Global Majority through developmental artist residencies.
Placing an emphasis on process and creative exploration, we take pride in providing our artists with financial support, time and space, and public programming opportunities. We do this through two developmental residencies: CRITICAL BREAKS and SKY LAB.
CRITICAL BREAKS is a residency program for artists who are in a pivotal phase of developing new work while SKY LAB supports artists who center community at the root of creative development, research and process. Continue reading to learn more about each.
Journal 2 Journal Applications are now open. Deadline: September 6, 11:59pm ET

CRITICAL BREAKS
CRITICAL BREAKS is a residency program for artists who are in a pivotal phase of developing new theater and/or performance work. The residency aims to provide artists with time and space to concentrate on a specific project and/or element of a project. This is an ideal for works that have already been started, and/or have perhaps received some institutional support, but are still in need of additional concentrated focus, funding and space.
Forms of work may include traditional theater, dance, performance and/or storytelling, or it may experiment with new technologies, movement, duration, site-specificity, hybridity, and more.
The residency period culminates with a WORK IN PROCESS [WIP]. [WIP] programs are designed in collaboration with the artist and Hi-ARTS.
Applications are now closed.

SKY LAB
SKY LAB is for artists who center the community at the root of creative development, research, and consideration. This may include relationship building, deep listening and discussion, experience design, community collaboration, storytelling, and other interdisciplinary methods and practices that take place alongside and in relation to an artist’s identified community.
We welcome artists to define what community engagement means to them. Time spent in residence may be used to engage directly with community members, work with collaborators and stakeholders, relationship building and/or processing past community engagement with the focus of engaging with audiences.
The residency period culminates with a WORK IN PROCESS [WIP]. [WIP] programs are designed in collaboration with artists and Hi-ARTS.

Journal 2 Journey
Developed in partnership with Urban Word, Journal 2 Journey (J2J) is a pre-professional, creative youth development initiative. This program is designed to inspire young artists to imagine the possibilities of writing that expand beyond traditional forms, styles, and genres while providing a platform that celebrates young voices. Previous participants have gone on to pursue successful careers as stage actors, playwrights, and designers.
Through an application process, six youth participants, ages 16 to 21, are selected to participate in a paid 15-week intensive, where they will work collaboratively with professional theater artists to refine their wiring skills and devise a professional one-act theatrical production. J2J youth participants will explore themes of the American experience and identity. Upon completion of the program, our artists will receive a stipend and will conclude the program with a live public performance.
Applications are now closed.
